Russia to reopen airbase in Abkhazia
According to reports in the Russian media, the Bomborski airbase in Abkhazia is soon to be reopened for use by the Russian Air Force. The plan calls for two squadrons of Su-27 fighter-bombers and Su-25 ground attack aircraft, plus some additional An-26 or An-72 transports to be permanently based in Abkhazia. The Bomborski airbase is located near the town of Gudauta and during Soviet years was home to the 171st Guards Interceptor Regiment of the 19th Air Defense Army. The 171st GIR was one of the first combat VVS units to deploy Su-27s.

Bomborski AFB, Abkhazia
The airbase was built as Class I strategic base with the main runway length of four kilometers, capable of supporting strategic bombers and heavy transport aircraft. Operating from Bomborski, Russian aircraft will be able to reach Georgian town of Poti – the country’s main seaport – in half the time (about 25-30 minutes) it would take to reach the same location from the nearest VVS base in Russia. The new airbase will serve as the primary air defense site for the planned new Black Sea Fleet base in Ochamchira, Abkhazia.

Hi Venik,
Interesting news about the SU-34s. Do you know how many SU-34s have already been built by Russia and how many are scheduled to be deployed in Abkhazia?

The Air Force completed their Su-34 test program late last year. Currently they have 6 or 10 such aircraft, according to different sources. The VVS is working out the details of a 5-year contract with Sukhoi to build 70 Su-34s. This should be signed shortly (or maybe they already signed – I am not sure, but Sukhoi already officially announced commencement of full-scale production). If I remember correctly, the plan was to have 24 operational Su-34s by the end of 2010. According to the information I have, an unspecified number of Su-34s will be based in Abkhazia, after the airbase gets a facelift.
