Universal Health Care
I just finished watching Michael Moore‘s ““. As always Moore hits the nail on the head. In simple terms he explains a complicated problem and the main reason behind it: HMOs are robbing us blind but we are too stupid, tired, scared and depressed to do anything about it. Our doctors and politicians continue to take kickbacks from insurance and pharmaceutical industries and we continue to receive some of the worst and most expensive health care in the developed world.
“Sicko” drew considerable criticism from the redneck right and, not surprisingly, from the health care insurance and pharmaceutical companies. While the position of HMOs and pharmaceuticals is natural, to the rest of Moore’s critics I can promise this: sooner or later you or someone you love will get very sick and you will get your chance to prove Moore wrong.
The problem is not with HMOs or pharmaceutical companies – they do what they can to maximize their profits. The problem is with the idiots who pay them – with all of us. As long as we are willing to reach deep into our pockets and pay insane amounts of money for something that we should be getting for free, there will never be a shortage of people willing to cash our checks.
Tune in to CNN and see how often the issue of universal medical care is raised versus the issue of terrorism. Your health is not very high on any politician’s list of priorities. Nobody really cares – not Obama, not Hillary, and sure as hell not McCain. You should find this very surprising, because the probability of you running into a doctor is much higher than the chance of encountering a terrorist, but the end result may be just as deadly.
We don’t need health insurance. What we need is guaranteed health care. So, watch the movie, let it sink in and, if you have any objections, just hold on to them until you have to pay your hospital bill. I have a feeling something may change your mind.
